What is the process of having an electric car charger installed?

Updated: Jan 12, 2023

I'm so glad you asked!

The first starting point is deciding that you are ready to make the switch to an electric car!

Whoo-hoo! Good for you. Electric vehicles are fun to drive, and now with 15 years of mainstream data to lean into, we can better extrapolate that EVs do serve an important role in reducing our global carbon emissions, even in states like AR where 35% of our electricity still comes from coal.

Now that you've got the bug and are bought in, you need to determine which type of plug-interface your vehicle or hypothetical vehicle uses.

There are basically just two names to know if you live in North America; Tesla, and J1772.

Now this is shocking, if you plan to purchase a Tesla, it will have a Tesla style plug. If you did not buy a Tesla, it will have a J1772! How neat is that.

There are SO MANY CHARGERS, which should I buy?

There are many factors to consider when purchasing a charger. We have great things to say about Tesla's Wall Connector (both for Tesla's and their new J1772 model), anything by Clipper Creek (check out their Find your EV Charger Tool), and blink charging also puts out a high quality product.

Consider googling what other owners of your same vehicle are using, try this format:

what type of charger did you buy (vehicle year) (vehicle make/model) forum

This should help deliver results from actual owners, not nameless blog posts from the internet ;)

Note: Be weary purchasing any high end electronics from non-reputable dealers including Amazon. Amazon allows 3rd party sales and is riddled with high-quality fakes, even if it looks like you buying straight from "Sony" "Samsung" or whomever.

Okay, I'll try to pick up the pace here.

If you live in Northwest Arkansas (specifically Benton, and Washington counties), navigate to Book Online and you can schedule an appointment without having to talk to a human! Make sure to skim our FAQ and ensure that your home qualifies

Alternatively, give us a shout at 479-364-7489 anytime, or send us an email contact@evnwa.com

Once you booked our service. We'll contact you and walk you through a 'Remote Survey'.

We need to see what type of electric panel you have, and be able to read the fine print listed inside. We'd also like to see a picture of where you would like your charger to be installed.

If you are unable to send photos, we'll work with and figure out another way, even if that means coming by your house.

Concurrently to surveying your site needs, we'll pull a permit for your home (some municipalities require owner's signature).

Behind the scenes we'll order materials and get everything lined up, the day before your service we will send you a text message confirming your appointment.

On the day of service, we typically arrive at 09:00 am for a morning service or 01:00 pm for an afternoon service (although your specific time will be confirmed with you, and may vary).

As a courtesy, we will notify you if we are running more than 15 minutes late (although we pride ourselves on showing up on time and ready to work!).

Typically with two electricians onsite we conclude our service in about 4 hours. 16 hours of labor are included with our Turn-Key EVSE package so you can rest assured, even if we hit some hurdles and hiccups along the way, your price is locked in.

We do reserve the right to charge a JCO (job-change order) in extenuating circumstances; when due to site conditions we are forced to run over 16 hours. Rest assured, in this event, we will charge an amount to help us break even, not hold you over a barrel.

Once your charger is powered on, our onsite work is complete (assuming we have already cleaned up our mess!). Some municipalities require in-person inspections, others are done remotely (our job isn't done until your permit is closed!).

Occasionally return trips are required for drywall, but that is also included in your package.

We do ask for you to leave us a five-star rating on Google. If you do not like you received five-star service, please call me ASAP. 100% customer satisfaction is our goal.

Too Long Didn't Read:

  1. Buy your Charger

  2. Book Online, over the phone, text, or email

  3. Remote Survey

  4. Permit

  5. Install

  6. Inspection

Typically, all the above steps are completed in about two weeks after booking.

We look forward to serving you!

Cheers,

Kiyoshi
